New catalog offers treasure trove of good reads for Presbyterian Women

by Evan Silverstein

LOUISVILLE -Presbyterian Women (PW) and the Presbyterian Publishing
Corporation (PPC) are partnering to put good books into the hands, hearts and
minds of Presbyterian women.

A small but selective catalog of books and resources, first mailed to
subscribers of Horizons magazine in March, has already earned more than
$1,000 for PW, while putting more than 1,000 PPC books in member's hands.

The 16-page catalog is available free of charge from Presbyterian
Distribution Services.

"We're off to a wonderful start," said the Rev. Annie McClure,
special accounts representative for PPC, who helped develop the new program.
"In just three months, more than 1,000 good books have been sold at special
discounts to Presbyterian women all over the country. Plus, since PPC is
donating 10 percent of all proceeds back to PW, the group has already earned
a check for $1,150 ... and it's really just starting to grow."

Last fall, recognizing that Presbyterian women needed quality support
materials for their various ministries, Horizons Editorial Committee (HEC)
approved the new program with PPC to provide and promote a solid and proven
portfolio of Westminster John Knox Press and Geneva Press books for
Presbyterian women.

It was also launched as a way of promoting Horizons' own studies,
resources, and educational materials, and to develop a potential new revenue
stream for funding other initiatives through the PW mission.

The catalog reflects the PW priorities - mission, Bible study,
justice and peace, and spirituality and diversity.

HEC assigned a subcommittee to review and validate the book list
proposed by PPC. Serving on that committee were several staff members from
the PW Communications Team.

"From the very beginning, the catalog program was understood to be a
test, albeit one that we hoped would find moderate success fairly quickly,"
said PW Moderator Kristen York Gerling. "Following the evaluation of this
program, we certainly will be open to considering future catalogs, applying
the same quality review standards for the benefit of our members."

PPC designed and covered the cost of printing and mailing the
catalog, while offering deeper discounts and free shipping on large orders.

PW arranged for the mailing to Horizons subscribers, fulfilling their
promise to keep the subscriber list confidential.

The program through PPC is now available only to Presbyterian Women.
However, McClure said PPC might develop similar programs for other groups
within the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) that express interest.

Presbyterian Women is the national women's organization of the
PC(USA). It is organized at all levels of the PC(USA) - in congregations,
presbyteries, and synods, as well as General Assembly. Horizons magazine and
Bible study provide ideas, information, and inspiration for Presbyterian
Women.

The Presbyterian Publishing Corporation is the denominational
publisher of the PC(USA). Collectively, it publishes more than 75 new works
each year, while maintaining a backlist of more than 1,100 active titles.
