Notes about people

by Jerry L. Van Marter

The Rev. Emily Enders Odom of Asheville, NC, has been named
communication officer for the Mission Initiative: Joining Hearts and Hands -
the five-year campaign to raise $40 million for overseas mission personnel
and new-church development in the United States, particularly in
racial-ethnic and immigrant communities.

Odom, who will mostly work from her North Carolina home, served for
many years on the communication and program staff of the Montreat Conference
Center. She has also been a volunteer mainstay in the General Assembly
Communication Center at Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) General Assemblies. She
and her husband, Asheville pastor John Odom, are graduates of Union
Theological Seminary in New York and are members of Western North Carolina
Presbytery.

Anna Abigail (Gail) Reed, 97, a long-time Presbyterian missionary in
northeast Africa and the Middle East, died recently. Reed served with her
husband, Glenn, in Sudan, Eritrea and Ethiopia. Glenn Reed began his mission
service in 1927; Gail joined him in 1931. Both retired in 1970.

Their son, Dr. David Reed, was instrumental in establishing the
Ethiopia Education Endowment Fund of the PC(USA).

Elder Daniel Stoepker, a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in
Detroit, who in January received the 2005 Rodney T. Martin Award from the
Presbyterian Health, Education and Welfare Association (PHEWA) for long-term
service to the organization, died of AIDS on Aug. 5.

Stoepker, who tested HIV-positive in 1986, was active in numerous
PC(USA) organizations, including More Light Presbyterians, That All May
Freely Serve, the Presbyterian AIDS Network and the PHEWA board of directors.
In 2000, he served as an elder commissioner to the 212th General Assembly in
Long Beach, CA.

Stoepker was surrounded by friends and family - including his son
Jeremy and his daughter Jennifer - when he died. A memorial service was held
at Westminster Church on Aug. 14.
