Aug. 23, 2005, Grand Rapids, Mich. - Grand Rapids native Emily Steenwyk
leaves for Honduras this month to work with businesswomen in
Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras.
Steenwyk, a graduate of Calvin College in language and international
development, will spend nine months or more working with women who own
small businesses in Tegucigalpa. Through the Christian Reformed World
Relief Committee (CRWRC) and Honduran partner Christian Stewardship
Ministries (MCM), Steenwyk will help broaden CRWRC's micro-enterprise
efforts.
Street life in the capital city of Honduras is devastating. Many,
especially women and children, will do anything to eat. Even a small
intervention can have enormous benefits.
CRWRC and MCM provide small loans to businesswomen to establish or
expand their enterprise. Steenwyk's work will be in the area of projects
such as domestic violence prevention and training in ethical business
practices.
Steenwyk is available for interview on Wednesday, Aug. 24, before she
leaves to begin her assignment. Contact Beth DeGraff at 616-241-1691
between 9 am and 5 pm EST today to arrange an interview. Or call toll
free 1-800-55-CRWRC.
For more information, visit www.crwrc.org or call 1-800-55-CRWRC. In
Canada, please call 1-800-730-3490. CRWRC is a non-profit agency of the
Christian Reformed Church in North America providing a ministry of
development, relief, and justice education to people in need around the
world.
