MECC Statement on the Gaza Withdrawal

The statement issued on August 17, 2005, describes the feelings of joy and
pride among all Palestinians and Arabs who look forward to the liberation of
Gaza and the West Bank and the establishment of an independent Palestinian
State with Jerusalem, for its Capital.

The Middle East Council of Churches (MECC) is committed since its
establishment says the statement to advocating for the ³national struggle of
the Palestinian people for freedom and independence². Extending warm
congratulations to the Palestinian National Authority, MECC General
Secretary underlines this historical achievement considering it a first step
towards the withdrawal from Palestinian territories occupied in 1967, and
prays for a better life for Palestinians in the future with "possibilities
for development and advancement in an atmosphere of peace and justice among
