US Sikh leader calls on Sikhs to aid Katrina victims

US Sikh leader Amolak Singh appealed Saturday for his fellow Sikhs to aid
victims of Hurricane Katrina.

"I would like to appeal to Sikhs all over America to donate money and do
whatever they can," said Singh, chairman for the US region of the World
Sikh Council.

He and his family lost their New Orleans home when flooding sparked by the
storm inundated the city. But they are more concerned with the fate of the
thousands of other evacuees, mostly poor, taking shelter at the convention
center in the state capital of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

A truckload of food, clothing and other aid from Sikhs in Texas was
diverted at Singh's request to evacuees inside the convention center. The
shipment had been intended for Sikhs in New Orleans.

"More than us, there are other people who have nothing at all. We're
getting food and shelter," Singh's wife, Tina Singh, said.
