Hurricane Rita may force
temporary shutdown of PresbyNet

As Hurricane Rita bore down on Texas, officials of the
Ecunet/Faithgroups computer network warned that its services might be shut
down on Friday, Sept. 23 "as a precautionary measure ... to ensure their
safety and the integrity of the data on them."

The Ecunet/Faithgroups data center is in Houston.

Ecunet officials said the proposed shutdown would affect "both the
Web interface and electronic mail." One part of the "Web interface" is
PresbyNet, which provides computer resources and discussion groups
specifically for members of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), and is
accessible from the PC(USA)'s Web site.

PresbyNet also is essential to the electronic (email) distribution of
Presbyterian News Service stories.

Ecunet, founded in 1985, is a non-profit online network of Christian
organizations.

Hurricane Rita, a category 4 storm, is expected to make landfall
Saturday somewhere between Galveston, TX, and the Texas-Louisiana border.
