Executive director search is on track

John Detterick's successor as GAC chief to be confirmed by next year's
Assembly

SACRAMENTO -  The search for the next executive director of the General
Assembly Council (GAC) of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) is on schedule,
the chair of the search committee told the council yesterday.

	Karen Dimon, of DeWitt, NY, said the committee has completed the job
description for the denomination's mission program "CEO" position, and public
advertising for it will begin on Oct. 15. The deadline for applications is
Jan. 15, 2006, she said.

	According to the search timeline, the GAC will elect a new leader
next spring. The election must be confirmed by the 217th General Assembly
next June in Birmingham, AL. 

	The new director will succeed John Detterick, who is retiring after
serving two four-year terms. Detterick is the third installed executive
director since Presbyterian reunion in 1983, and the first to serve two
terms.

	Elder S. David Stoner served from 1987 to 1991, then declined a
second term. The Rev. James D. Brown was elected and confirmed in 1992, but
was denied confirmation for a second term by the 1996 General Assembly after
having been reelected by the GAC.

	Two other church leaders have served as interim executive director -
the Rev. William R. Phillippe, who followed Stoner in the office, and the
Rev. Frank Diaz, who followed Brown.

	According to the minutes of the 216th General Assembly (2004),
Detterick's salary is $153,353. The council's executive committee yesterday
voted to give him a 3 percent cost-of-living increase, retroactive to Jan. 1.
