Ghost Ranch celebrates 50th anniversary

by Jerry L. Van Marter

LOUISVILLE - Ghost Ranch, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)'s scenic
conference center in Abiquiu, NM, has scheduled an array of events for the
weekend of Oct. 1-2 to celebrate its golden anniversary.

The 21,000-acre ranch, chosen as one of 20 "must visit" vacation
sites in the United States by U.S. News & World Report magazine, was given to
the Board of Christian Education of the then-United Presbyterian Church in
the U.S.A. by Arthur and Phoebe Park in 1955.

Members of the Park family will be among the guests during the
weekend festivities at the ranch. They will be joined by the Rev. John Fife,
a former moderator of the PC(USA) General Assembly and pastor of Southside
Presbyterian Church in Tucson, AZ; and Jim Shibley, the ranchlands
superintendent at Ghost Ranch for more than 40 years before his recent
retirement.

Among the special events on the schedule:

A slide presentation by Dale Brubaker, a field director in the
southwest for the Board of Christian Education at the time the Parks gave
Ghost Ranch to the church;

Tours of the ranch and its various museums;

A book-signing by Lesley Poling-Kemps of her recent book, Ghost
Ranch;

An interfaith worship service;

A celebration dinner, program and dance Oct. 1; and

A closing worship service on Oct. 2.
