Florida pastor endorsed for moderator

Tim Halverson of Peace River Presbytery
says he represents PC(USA)'s 'forgotten center'

By Jerry L. Van Marter

LOUISVILLE - Peace River Presbytery has unanimously endorsed the Rev. H.
Timothy (Tim) Halverson as a candidate for moderator of next year's 217th
General Assembly in Birmingham, AL.

Halverson has been pastor of Faith Presbyterian Church in Cape Coral,
FL, since 1997. In his eight years there, Faith church has enrolled more than
1,100 new members. It is now building a new, 1,200-seat sanctuary.

Halverson is the second declared candidate for the Assembly's top
elected post. The other is the Rev. Kerry Carson, pastor of First
Presbyterian Church of Conrad, IA, who was endorsed by his North Central Iowa
Presbytery in August.

"In a left-right world, we have forgotten the center," Halverson said
after the presbytery endorsement. "And the center of the PCUSA, yesterday,
today and tomorrow, is Jesus Christ."

Graham Hart, Peace River's general presbyter, said of Halverson, "We
need a strong and articulate voice from the center to hold us together in
these difficult times."

Halverson, who was born and raised in Akron, OH, is a graduate of
Muskingum College and Yale University Divinity School. He earned his D.Min
from Eastern Theological Seminary in 1982, where his focus was evangelism and
church growth.

Before moving to Cape Coral, Halverson pastored a small congregation
(First Presbyterian Church in Watsontown, PA); a university church (Kent
Presbyterian in Kent, OH); and a big suburban church (First Presbyterian
Church in LaGrange, IL, near Chicago).

He is chair of Peace River Presbytery's Committee on Ministry, and
has served on the boards of community groups addressing addiction,
homelessness and community-development issues.

Halverson and his wife, Martha, an artist and entrepreneur, have
seven children. Their daughter, Helen, was a co-moderator of the Youth
Advisory Delegate caucus at the 2004 General Assembly in Richmond, VA.
