The MECC Justice, Peace & Human Rights (JPHR) Program and Unit on Faith &
Unity organized a regional consultation to discuss the Role of Religious
Institutions in promoting Human Rights & Democracy.

20 participants, Christians and Muslims, from Lebanon, Jordan and Egypt
attended the consultation from November 26-27, 2005 in Beirut, Lebanon. The
consultation was a follow up to the April 2005 meeting held in Cyprus on the
theme ³The Gospel: a Full Commitment for Citizenship Part II² and focused
on
two axes: the role of religious and ecclesiastical institutions in promoting
democracy and in protecting human rights and dignity, and the adaptation and
renewal of the theological discourse, in light of the realities lived by
Middle eastern societies with respect to human rights and democracy.

In addition to major interventions on the topics, live testimonies on pilot
projects were on the program.

The consultation highlighted the importance of secularism and faith and came
out with a plan of action for 2005-2007 focusing on awareness and
empowerment at grass roots level, and on the promotion of new institutional
leadership for the transformation of their institutions. For more
