Tanzanian seminary to benefit from Atlanta Bible drive

The Diocese of Atlanta is collecting theology books to help with the
education of seminarians in Dodoma, Tanzania, as well as cash donations
to purchase study Bibles.

The Rev. Dr. Paul A. Elliott, rector of St. Michael and All Angels,
Stone Mountain, is coordinating the effort with Bishop Mdimi Mhogolo of
the Diocese of Central Tanganyika, Tanzania.

Mhogolo has provided a list of books needed for the seminary library.
The books will be used by professors, students and parish clergy and
will enable the theology degree program to become accredited and the
seminary to confer degrees to its students.

"Each of our students needs their own study Bible," said Mhogolo. "There
are currently 52 students in the English diploma or degree program. We
can buy an African Study Bible for $10 which comes with a commentary
directed toward the African worldview. It is the American version,
published and underwritten by the Roman Catholic Church."

"Clergy and laity are invited to review the list of specified books and
'go shopping' in their personal libraries," Elliott said. "Honestly, if
you aren't using them, then please pass them on." Cash gifts to cover
the cost of the Bibles are welcome also.

A delegation of Episcopal Church bishops and staff, including Bishop
Neil Alexander of Atlanta and Bishop Suffragan Catherine Roskam of New
York, visited Western Tanzania June 30-July 1, 2005. The group met with
refugees, staff from NGOs and the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees
(UNHCR), and visited schools, medical facilities, and processing
centers.

Books should be delivered to Diocesan Offices, 2744 Peachtree St.,
Atlanta, GA 30305, as soon as possible to prepare them for shipment. A
container of books and medical supplies will be shipped to Africa in
mid-February.
