Archbishop Demetrios of America Meets with President of the Republic of
Cyprus

Nicosia, Cyprus -- His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America continued his visit to Cyprus today after meeting with the President of the Republic of Cyprus Tassos Papadopoulos at a private dinner at the Presidential Residence.

The second day of this official visit began with His Eminence placing a wreath at the statue of Archbishop Makarios III, which is located in front of the Presidential Palace. Following, Archbishop Demetrios met privately with President Papadopoulos in his office where the two discussed the latest developments in the Cypriot issue, including the possibilities that exist and the role of Greek Americans in supporting Cyprus. In this meeting His Eminence stated that he will continue on the path of support towards a just resolution of the Cyprus
issue.

Following the meeting, Archbishop Demetrios met with the members of the Holy Synod at the Holy Archdiocese of Cyprus and was honored at a welcoming ceremony which took place at the Cathedral of Saint John at the Archdiocese. Afterwards, Archbishop Demetrios toured the Holy Archdiocese where he visited the ill Archbishop Chrysostomos. He also toured the residence of the late Archbishop Makarios III and the magnificent Byzantine monument and other historical areas of the Archdiocese.

Following, His Eminence, accompanied by the wife of the President of Cyprus, Fotini Papadopoulos, visited various philanthropic institutions. Archbishop Demetrios offered symbolic monetary gifts on behalf of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. Also offering symbolic monetary gifts were the Vice President of the National Philoptochos Society, Maria Stavropoulos, National Commander of the Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in America, Dr. Anthony Limberakis, Andrew Athens on behalf of the United Hellenic American Congress (UHAC) and Panikos Papanikolaou on behalf of the Cyprus Federation of America.
