AUSTIN, TEXAS - Lydia Hernandez and Hans-Richard Nevermann received the 2006 Austin Seminary Association (ASA) Awards for Service. Hernandez, an ordained PC(USA) minister, is a lifelong social-justice worker who is now executive director of Manos de Cristo in Austin. Hans-Richard Nevermann is an ex-Nazi soldier who later dedicated his life to ministry in reconciliation.

AUSTIN, TEXAS - Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary and the Synod of the Sun of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) will celebrate 50 years of ordaining women as ministers of Word and Sacrament March 21-23 with worship, hands-on projects and reflections on a half-century of ministerial service by PC(USA) women. Scheduled to preach are Cheryl Kirk-Duggan, a professor of theology and director of women's studies at Shaw University Divinity School in Raleigh, NC, and Sallie Watson, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, Bonham, TX. LOUISVILLE - W. Eugene March, the A.B. Rhodes Professor Emeritus of Old Testament at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, received the Austin College James I. McCord Award for Outstanding Service to the Presbyterian Church. March, who taught at Louisville Seminary for 22 years, is the eighth recipient of the award, which was established by his alma mater in 1998.

PRINCETON, NJ - Robert A. Seiple, founder and chairman of the board of the Institute for Global Engagement and a former U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom, is the recipient of Princeton Theological Seminary's 2006 Abraham Kuyper Prize for Excellence in Reformed Theology and Public Life. He will receive the award on April 6, when he will deliver the seminary's Kuyper Lecture, titled "The Gospel Blimp Revisited: Reflections on Christian Witness and Persecution." The Kuyper Prize is awarded annually to a scholar or community leader who has contributed to the development of Reformed theology, particularly as it bears on matters of public life.

PRINCETON, NJ - The New Jersey Historic Trust has awarded Princeton Theological Seminary a preservation grant of $49,995 to pay for the development of a preservation plan for the seminary's historic buildings. The New Jersey Historic Trust funds the restoration and conservation of the state's historic treasures. Historic buildings are structures 50 years old or older; those on Princeton's campus range from Alexander Hall (built in 1815) to Speer Library (1957).

SAN ANSELMO, CA - Andrew Colin Gow, a professor of history at the University of Alberta and an observant Jew, is a visiting scholar at San Francisco Theological Seminary for February. Gow, whose specialties include apocalypticism, popular religion and culture, the history of theology, the history of witchcraft, and Christian-Jewish relations, will present a lecture at the San Anselmo campus on Feb. 21 titled, "Can Jews be Saved? Antichrist, Apocalypse & Christian Zionism." The lecture is co-sponsored by the History-Theology Concentration and the Global Christianity Program at SFTS.

RICHMOND, VA - Union Theological Seminary and Presbyterian School of Christian Education has honored six Presbyterian congregations for effective ministries. Each church was given $1,000 to support the ministries. The winners:

First Presbyterian Church in Birmingham, MI, received the James Goodpasture Award for Ministry with Special Populations for a special church-school class called Celebration Station for children with disabilities, and for its churchwide efforts to serve these children and their families.

Camp Hill Presbyterian Church in Camp Hill, PA, received the Sarah Hill Brown Award for Early Childhood Education for its weekday preschool that has served community children for more than 50 years. The Camp Hill preschool offers innovative programs for children and families and is one of the few preschools in the area that accepts children with developmental disabilities.

United Dakota Presbyterian Church in Wolf Point, MT, and Crafton United Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh, PA, each received the Katherine Hawes Award for Effective Youth Ministry. United Dakota Presbyterian was selected for a youth group that includes Native American youth; Crafton United Presbyterian Church was chosen for a youth ministry involving elementary-, middle- and high school-age children from the surrounding community; more than half are from low-income families.

First Presbyterian Church in Snohomish, WA, received the WT "Tolly" Thompson Award for Excellence in Christian Education for its programs ranging from church school to adult education to programs that teach faith formation, discipleship and outreach.

Second Presbyterian Church in Bloomington, IL, received the Elinor Curry Award for Outreach and Social Concern for its ministry to the homeless through The Compassion Center, built in 2004, which offers shelter and services to an average of 52 people daily.
