Historians, archivists to meet in Mobile
[Episcopal News Service] Episcopalians, history lovers or those wishing to learn more about the Gulf Coast are invited to attend the National Episcopal Historians and Archivists (NEHA) annual meeting in Mobile, Alabama, April 25-29, 2006.
Each year professional, volunteer, trained and amateur historians and archivists gather to share information, hear papers, and learn about the host diocese. This year members of the Episcopal Women's History Project will also participate.
The historic Christ Church Cathedral will be the venue for the meeting themed "Religion and Architecture on the Gulf Coast." The emphasis will be on the history of the Anglican/ Episcopal Church from the 18th century to the present.
Christ Church Cathedral, the oldest Protestant church in Alabama, will serve as the host of this year's NEHA meeting. While receiving cathedral designation in 2005, Christ Church Cathedral traces its roots back to 1822 and hosted the convention that led to the creation of the Diocese of Alabama in 1830. The Cathedral, located in downtown Mobile, has an active ministry in the community and hosts various events throughout the year for those working and/or living in the area.
"People will leave this meeting with a sense of history on the northern Gulf Coast," said Kit Caffey, chair of the NEHA planning committee. "It will be a learning experience for archivists both amateur and professional."
Highlights of the meeting will include a day trip to Pensacola, Florida, a visit to historic churches in Mobile, the annual membership meeting, an elaborate Gulf Coast seafood dinner and walking tours of downtown Mobile.
The cost of the conference is $160 for members and $190 for non-members. Included in the cost are several meals, bus trips and the conference presentations.
