Notes about people

by Jerry L. Van Marter

Mary Ensign Pardee, 87, a leader in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) for more than 30 years and a tireless advocate for social-justice programs, died on March 7 after a brief illness.

She died at the retirement home near Pittsburgh where she live with her husband of 65 years, William.

A native of Little Rock, AR, Pardee served the PC(USA) in a variety of capacities: as president of the Synod of Pennsylvania Synodical, 1968-1973; national president of Presbyterian Women, 1973-1976; a board member and then vice president for financial development for Church Women United, 1976-1985; and a supporter and board member of the international development organization Oikocredit (formerly the Ecumenical Development Cooperative Society), 1981-2003.

Pardee traveled the world visiting mission projects on behalf of the PC(USA)'s Commission on Ecumenical Mission and Relations, which led her to spearhead efforts to make world hunger a denominational priority. Over three decades she attended numerous international peace conferences.

Opening the doors of education to women of all races and nationalities was another of Pardee's priorities. She served on several educational institution boards, and a Pittsburgh Presbytery scholarship fund to support women students in Malawi is named for her. In 1990, she was honored as one of the PC(USA)'s Women of Faith.

A memorial service has been scheduled for March 25 at Fox Chapel Presbyerian Church in Pittsburgh, where Pardee was a charter member. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, three grandchildren, a sister and two brothers.
