Episcopal Church's director of mission featured on 'Day 1'
[ENS, Atlanta, GA] The Rev. Dr. James B. Lemler, director of mission for the Episcopal Church, is featured in three installments of Day 1, a nationally broadcast weekly radio program, on the Sundays leading up to Holy Week, March 26, April 2 and April 9.
Each program includes a sermon preached by Lemler and a five-minute interview with him conducted by the program's executive producer and host, Peter Wallace. Lemler last preached on Day 1 in 2002.
As the church's director of mission, Lemler is a member of the management team of the Episcopal Church Center in New York City. He is former dean and president of Seabury-Western Theological Seminary, Evanston, Illinois, and has served as a consultant and conference leader for numerous congregations, dioceses and nonprofit organizations. For 17 years he was rector of Trinity Church, Indianapolis, and is a founding member of the Consortium of Endowed
Episcopal Parishes.
For his first sermon, Lemler preaches on the feeding of the 5,000 from the Gospel of John. "The number of hungry mouths that show up for dinner is quite incidental when you look at it from God's perspective," he says. "This miraculous story reveals a compassionate God who recognizes that people are very, very hungry, and then responds to that hunger by feeding them. It depicts the abundance of love and compassion that God has for people in their hunger and need."

NOEL elects new chairman
[ENS, Pittsburgh, PA] Ray Yorke has been elected the new chairman of NOEL, an Anglican/Episcopal organization dedicated to ending abortion and euthanasia, protecting embryos from research abuse, and promoting abstinence and adoption.
Effective immediately, Yorke, a member of St. John the Evangelist in Newport, Rhode Island, where he serves as senior warden, will succeed the Rev. D. Lorne Coyle, rector of Trinity Church, Vero Beach, Florida, who will continue to contribute as a board member.
Yorke has been a NOEL board member for two years.
New leadership elected for Churches Uniting in Christ
[ENS, Charlotte, N.C.] The Rev. Patrice L. Rosner, associate general secretary for the Education and Leadership Ministries Commission of the National Council of Churches in the USA (NCC), was recently elected director of Churches Uniting in Christ (CUIC).
CUIC is an ecumenical initiative comprised of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, the African Methodist Episcopal Church Zion, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, the Episcopal Church, the International Council of Community Churches , the Presbyterian Church USA, the United Church of Christ, and the United Methodist Church. In addition, there are two "Partners in Mission and Dialogue": the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the Moravian Church (Northern Province).
Effective June 5, 2006, Rosner will begin her duties as the primary staff to CUIC, helping them to live out their relationship in seeking full communion in mission, service, worship and ministry.
In her work with the NCC, she has provided leadership in the areas of dismantling systemic institutional racism, preparing Bible study curriculum, developing programs for a variety of age levels and settings and continuing education for pastors and lay leaders, and ecumenical formation of youth and young adults.
In addition to Rosner, the persons listed were elected to the following positions:
* The Rev. Dr. Suzanne Webb, pastor of a Disciples congregation in St. Louis - president * Bishop Ronald Cunningham, ecumenical officer for the C.M.E. Church - vice president * Abraham Wright, a layperson in the International Council of Community Churches and teacher in Beltsville, MD - secretary * James Tse, an elder in the Presbyterian Church (USA) and an accountant in New York - treasurer
Anna Hathaway, wife of retired Pittsburgh Bishop Hathaway, dies
[ENS, Tallahassee, FL] Anna Hathaway, wife of the Rt. Rev. Alden Hathaway, retired Bishop of Pittsburgh, died March 16, 2006 after a long illness.
Hathaway was a children's librarian who, while in Pittsburgh, organized the "Little Book Room" in the library at Trinity Episcopal School for Ministry.
Her funeral was held March 20 at St. John's, Tallahassee, but a memorial service will be held in Pittsburgh on a later date.
In her memory, the family has requested that all gifts be directed to the newly established Uganda Christian University Children's Library in Mukono, Uganda.
