by Jerry L. Van Marter

LOUISVILLE - The Rev. Clifton Kirkpatrick, stated clerk of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), will preach during an April 5 memorial service celebrating the life of the Rev. James E. Andrews, Kirkpatrick's predecessor as clerk for 23 years.

The service will begin at 3 p.m., Eastern Standard Time, in the Presbyterian Center chapel here.

Andrews, 77, died on March 7 after being struck by a car while walking near his home in Decatur, GA. His funeral was March 12 at Oakhurst Presbyterian Church in Decatur.

Leadership of the memorial service will be shared by several of Andrews' closest friends and colleagues through the years, including organist Alan Barthel; former General Assembly Moderator Freda Gardner; two former associate stated clerks, Catherine Phillippe and Juanita Granady; General Assembly Council Executive Director John Detterick; current Office of the General Assembly staffers Mark Tammen and Robina Winbush; and soloist Sandra Adams.

The music will include selections from Mozart and Handel.

A time of reflection will include a brief slide show recounting Andrews' wide range of service to the PC(USA). In addition to serving as stated clerk from 1973 to 1996, he served as a pastor in Houston, as a communications officer for the World Alliance of Reformed Churches in Geneva, and on the staff of Princeton Theological Seminary.
