The MECC received with appreciation the statement issued by Rev. Dr. Bob Edgar, Secretary General of the National Council of Churches (NCC-USA) urging the US Government to use the closing of Iraq¹s Abu Ghraib Prison as an opportunity to renew the American nation¹s resolve not to use torture and abuse as defense weapons, and to close ³another dark icon of history², the Guantanamo Bay retention camp in Cuba. ³This is the urgent call of civilized nations around the globe² says Dr. Edgar and the ³urgent call of Americans who love their country and all that it stands for².
