Assembly leaders named

Commissioners, GA business to be divided among 15 committees

by Jerry L. Van Marter

LOUISVILLE - Fifteen committees will process the business of the 217th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) in June, according to the Office of the General Assembly (OGA).

Committee leaders for the eight-day Assembly, which starts on June 15 in Birmingham, AL, also were named this week by OGA and Moderator Rick Ufford-Chase. Each committee will have elected commissioners as moderator and vice-moderator, plus an appointed assistant and a parliamentarian/recorder.

The 534 commissioners - 267 elders and 267 ministers - will be randomly assigned to the 15 committees. Nearly every item of business before the Assembly will be processed by one of the committees, which will make recommendations to the full Assembly. The committees will meet all day on June 16 and 17, and on the afternoon of June 18 if necessary.

Some Assembly committees will be more closely watched than others.

Proposals to amend or delete the constitutional ordination standards will be considered by Assembly Committee 04 - Church Orders. The report of the Theological Task Force on Peace, Unity and Purity of the Church has been assigned to Assembly Committee 06 - Ecclesiology. Various proposals related to Middle East peace and to the 2004 Assembly's decision to "initiate the process of selective, phased divestment" from multinational corporations profiting from the occupation of Gaza and the West Bank and the construction of Israel's security barrier will be considered by Assembly Committee 11 - Peacemaking and International Issues.

Business related to abortion and disabilities issues will be considered by Assembly Committee 10 - Health Issues. Proposals on the role and status of church educators will go to Committee 12 - Church Growth and Christian Education. A major doctrinal statement on the Trinity will be considered by Assembly Committee 13 - Theological Issues and Institutions.

Proposals on whether to maintain the Presbyterian Historical Society's facility in Montreat, NC, will be considered by Assembly Committee 03 - General Assembly Procedures. Assembly Committee 09 - Social Justice Issues - will consider such matters as torture, human rights, economic globalization, usury and economic security for older adults. The General Assembly's mission budget and Mission Work Plan for 2007-2008 will be handled by Assembly Committee 08 - Mission Coordination and Budgets.
