Notes about people

by Jerry L. Van Marter

The Rev. Patrice L. Rosner, associate general secretary of the Education and Leadership Ministries Commission of the National Council of Churches (NCC), has been elected director of the ecumenical organization Churches Uniting in Christ (CUIC). She takes office on June 5.

Rosner, a minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), will be the top staffer to CUIC (a group that succeeds the Consultation on Church Union). She will try to help the member communions live out their relationships in seeking full communion in mission, service, worship and ministry.

The CUIC Coordinating Council also elected new officers during a recent meeting in Charlotte, NC: the Rev. Dr. Suzanne Webb, pastor of a Disciples congregation in St. Louis, president; Bishop Ronald Cunningham, Ecumenical Officer for the C.M.E. Church, vice president; Abraham Wright, a lay person in the International Council of Community Churches and teacher in Beltsville, MD, secretary; and James Tse, an elder in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and accountant in New York, treasurer.

The Rev. Mary Jane Cornell, pastor of Druid Hills Presbyterian Church in Atlanta, will preach on Easter, April 16, on "Day 1," the nationally broadcast radio program also accessible via streaming audio and podcast on the Internet at day1.net.

Cornell, the winner of the first "Day 1" Sermon of the Year Award, will preach her winning sermon, titled "Set Free," and be interviewed by the program's host, Peter Wallace.

"Day 1," formerly known as "The Protestant Hour," has been aired every week for 60 years. It is produced by the Episcopal Media Center in association with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, the Episcopal Church, the United Methodist Church, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and the United Church of Christ.

A lifetime's worth of inspirational sermons, and the man who wrote and delivered them, were honored recently in a special ceremony at the Washington National Cathedral. The Rev. Frederick Buechner, 79, author of more than 30 books and an inspiration to generations of Christian ministers, was the star of the event.

Those paying tribute to Buechner included the Rev. Samuel T. Lloyd III, dean of the Washington National Cathedral; the Rev. Barbara Brown Taylor, author and religion teacher at Piedmont College in Demorest, GA; and the Rev. Thomas G. Long, author and professor of preaching at Emory University in Atlanta.

Cecilia Casal has been named acting moderator of the coordinating team of Hispanas/Latinas Presbyterian Women, succeeding Margarita Reyes, who resigned as moderator to dedicate more time to her studies. Casal, who was formerly vice moderator of the organization, will serve until July 2007.

Kevin R.E. Eckstrom has been named editor of Religion News Service (RNS), effective May 1. He succeeds Mark O'Keefe, who will join the editorial staff of the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life.

Eckstrom has spent the past year serving as associate editor for RNS. Before that, as the news service's national correspondent, he reported mainly on the Catholic and mainline Protestant churches. In that capacity, he has covered several PC(USA) General Assemblies. He directed RNS's coverage last year of the death of Pope John Paul II and the election of Pope Benedict XVI.

Eckstrom joined the RNS staff in February 2000 after working as religion editor of the Stuart/Port St. Lucie News in Florida. He begins his new work on May 1.
