Monday Music: UK-LA beat goes on as choir returns to Westminster Abbey [ENS] Westminster Abbey has invited the choir of St. James' Church, Los Angeles, to sing services August 20-27 as choir-in-residence. It is the choir's second such pilgrimage following a similar visit in 1999. In preparation for the trip, music director James Paul Buonemani led the choir in a March 12 "Lenten Procession of Lessons and Anthems" based on the popular Advent and Christmastide services of King's College, Cambridge. Actor Michael York was guest lector for the liturgy, which featured music ranging from Gregorian chant to Arvo Pärt. "The poetry and music combined to express the sentiments of penitence, passion, forgiveness and redemption," said Buonemani, music director at St. James' Church since 1995. The Wilshire Center church is home to the Great Music at St. James series and the renowned 1911 Murray Harris John David Falconer Memorial organ.
