New Observer at the UN Sought for Important Global Role

Special report from ACNS, London

The post of Anglican Observer at the United Nations will shortly become vacant with the retirement of the current post holder, Archdeacon Taimalelagi Fagamalama Tuatagaloa-Matalavea, in July.

A tribute to the Archdeacon will appear in the next issue of Anglican Episcopal World and she was honoured with the Cross of St Augustine by the Archbishop of Canterbury during the resent Joint Standing Committee Meeting of the Anglican Consultative Council and the Primates.

"The good work begun over these past years must be continued and increase in its scope if the post UN Observer truly serves the Communion," said Canon Kenneth Kearon, Secretary General of the Anglican Communion to ACNS. He commented, "Our Anglican brothers and sisters face extraordinary circumstances in many parts of the world. Having our Anglican observer gives us, as church an opportunity, to be seen and heard in one of the world's most important forums."

Anglican Communion representation in global settings, such as the UN, gives the church the opportunity that it not only a role of advocacy, but also true mission.

Those who have served as Anglican Observer, The Rt Revd Sir Paul Reeves of New Zealand, the Rt Revd James Ottley of Panama and Archdeacon Tai of Samoa, have brought unique gifts to the post, and have used the post to serve other programmes that relate to the UN focus and the Communion focus at the same time, such as the emphasis on women's concerns at the UN over the past several years.
