Statement of Purpose for Concurrent General Assemblies between the Cumberland Presbyterian Church (176th General Assembly) Cumberland Presbyterian Church in America (132nd General Assembly) Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (217th General Assembly)

BIRMINGHAM, June 15 * As we look forward to our concurrent General Assemblies in 2006, while not looking toward organic reunion, we affirm our call to unity and cooperative ministry and seek to accomplish the following:

Celebrate the 300th anniversary of Presbyterianism in America and recognize our common Presbyterian heritage and the unique gifts these three traditions bring to our Presbyterian identity;

Re-affirm the common ministries we share among our churches such as the Youth Triennium, Presbyterian Council on Chaplains and Military Personnel, Coalition for Appalachian Ministries, Book of Common Worship, and many others;

Share learnings about the faith heritage of each of the churches with one another;

Participate together in shared worship, common Bible study and educational experiences, and shared exhibit halls;

Discern programmatic and mission opportunities within each of our churches that could be available for sharing by all of the churches and that might be enhanced on a cooperative basis;

Experience a sense of Christian fellowship and unity among those gathered from our three churches in Birmingham that can be replicated in our presbyteries and congregations;

And serve as a catalyst for continued experiences of shared worship, fellowship, education and common mission as we seek God’s direction for the future of Presbyterian witness in the 21st century.
