Church Growth and Christian Education committee New media advertisements greeted with applause

by Rob Klouw

BIRMINGHAM, June 18 * The Committee on Church Growth and Christian Education previewed the next round of "Here and Now" campaign, the media-awareness enterprise of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A), on Saturday morning and reacted with applause and cheers.

The "Here and Now" campaign, a joint project between the Office of Communication and the National Ministries Division, rolled out phase two of the communications project with four new television, three new radio, and ten new print advertisements.

Presbyterians will be able to order two media-awareness kits that have varied, focused messages. The first kit is aimed at unchurched young adults, 18 to 25, and has a message that the PC(USA) is a place of spirituality and community. The second kit is focused around the church seasons of Advent and Lent. The kits will be available through Presbyterian Distribution Service after August 1.

One of the primary goals of the Mission Work Plan of the General Assembly Council is to grow and diversify membership in the church. Rob Klouw, associate for communications in National Ministries, stated, "We are extremely pleased with how the spots were received by the committee. We have heard from the broader church that there is a real need for media advertisements that will help governing-body staff and congregations reach out to the unchurched, especially young adults and college students."

To help achieve that goal, the Evangelism and Witness area of National Ministries has worked on making available at cost a package of advertisements that will help increase the awareness and affinity for the denomination among a younger and more diverse audience.

Employing the theme line "Here and Now," the ads appeal to the target audience with messages that relate to real-life choices and decisions. According to Klouw, "We are really trying to convey a new message to young adults that the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A) is 'Here and Now,' present in your life and a spiritual support during challenging times."

While here at the Assembly catch a glimpse of the ads in the exhibit hall (booth 518).
