Peace, non-violence colloquium set for Sept. 11-13

Stony Point event aims to counter 'misguided' war policies

by Toya Richards Hill

LOUISVILLE - Ministers, lay leaders and anyone else interested in witnessing for peace and non-violence is invited to attend a conference centered around now-historic Sept. 11.

The 2006 Peacemaking Colloquium "Living the Gospel of Peace & Non-violence" will take place Sept. 11-13 at Stony Point Center in New York. It is jointly sponsored by Stony Point, the Presbyterian Peacemaking Program and the Advisory Committee for Social Witness Policy (ACSWP).

Themes for the colloquium, the third since the 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States, will include theologically grounding the work of peacemaking, exploring new thinking and sharing current efforts.

"This is to provide people really with some deeper thinking from the Christian community," particularly regarding the church's role in contrast to government's "misguided policies" on war, said the Rev. Christian Iosso, ACSWP coordinator.

"We want to equip them with arguments and moral analysis," he said, adding that between 100 to 120 people have previously attended the conference. "We want to give people a vision of another way."

The goal also is to communicate the policies of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) General Assembly (GA), which includes opposing unilateral militarism, Iosso said.

The conference program includes opening worship that encompasses a liturgy of mourning for public tragedies, plenary and discussion groups on creating a culture of peacemaking, and keynote speeches on "Resisting Imperial Temptation" and "Re-envisioning the Gospel's Peaceful Power."

There also will be presentations on the United Nations and U.S. government diplomacy, and the new Presbyterian U.N. representative may possibly be introduced at the conference, Iosso said.

The list of colloquium speakers, which is still in development, includes the Rev. Gary Dorrien, Reinhold Niebuhr professor of social ethics at Union Theological Seminary in New York; the Rev. Catherine Keller, professor of constructive theology in the Theological and Graduate Schools of Drew University; and the Rev. Peter Heltzel, assistant professor of systematic theology at New York Theological Seminary.
