Longtime educator, missionary Ollie Gannaway dies

With husband, Bruce, served PC(USA) here and in Africa

by Jerry L. Van Marter

LOUISVILLE * Ollie Johnson Gannaway, who served the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) as an educator and musician, missionary and peacemaker for more than 40 years, died Aug. 12 in a local hospital after a brief illness. She was 78.

Gannaway worked in this country and in Africa alongside her husband of 52 years, Bruce, who died last October. In addition to her own mission service as a musician, teacher and international peacemaker, Gannaway relished the role of pastor's wife. The Gannaways were an inseparable team.

Born July 15, 1928 in Starkville, MS, Gannaway attended high school and college in her hometown, graduating from Mississippi State University in 1948. She then earned her Master of Christian Education in 1950 from the Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Richmond, VA. She served as a Christian educator in churches in Ripley and Cleveland, MS, before marrying Bruce Gannaway in 1953.

In 1961, the Gannaways entered overseas mission service in Africa, serving in Egypt, Kenya, Malawi and Ghana. Upon their return to the U.S. in 1978, Ollie spent three years coordinating the print publications of the Office of the General Assembly and then for 12 years, until her retirement in 1993, coordinated the international activities of the Presbyterian Peacemaking Program. She was known and loved by scores of international peacemakers related to the PC(USA) for her skilled and gracious hosting of their visits to the U.S.

Following their retirement, Ollie and Bruce Gannaway remained active in the peacemaking and international mission activities of the PC(USA) as well as at Crescent Hill Presbyterian Church in Louisville.

In addition to Bruce, Ollie was preceded in death by her parents, Harper and Bess Johnson; her sister, Betty Thrower Jones; and her brothers Harper Johnson Jr., Edward Johnson, Bill Johnson, and the Rev. Smiley Johnson.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Grace and Philip Bos; her sone and daughter-in-law, Bill and Karen Gannaway; five grandchildren * Sawyer and Teagan Bos and Celia, Will and Carter Gannaway; and her sister Ann McWhorter of Starkville, MS.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Aug. 19 at 1pm at Crescent Hill Presbyterian Church in Louisville. In lieu of flowers, Ollie's family has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Presbyterian Peacemaking Program (http://www.pcusa.org/peacemaking).
