Title: Taiwanese Presbyterian Works to Organize Christian University Presidents.

Taiwan Church News 2842, 14-20 August 2006

Reported by Li Hsin-ren. Written by David Alexander

Following the establishment of an alliance of Christian Universities in Taiwan, Dr. Chen Chin-seng, the president of Chang Jung Christian University (an agency of the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan) expressed a desire to convene of a fellowship of Christian University Presidents (this group including presidents of many institutions not allied with churches or Christian organizations). The new group seeks to apply the principles of Christianity to leadership in higher education across the board. His idea drew affirmation from PCT General Secretary Chang Te-chien and the Rev. Morley Lee, who is the new General Secretary of the Chinese Coordination Centre for World Evangelism.

Forty years ago, when the now Dr. Chen Chin-seng was a middle school student in an experimental school run by the National Normal University in Taipei, Rev. Lee was the counselor/sponsor of a Christian fellowship group on campus. When Rev. Lee visited the PCT General Assembly on August 11, Dr. Chen showed up for a reunion. The two of them reminisced about times gone by.

Dr.Chen informed Rev. Lee and others with him about the Christian Universities Alliance and learned from them about several Christians who serve state and private schools as presidents. These include at least two from colleges of physical education in the Taipei area. If these could form a fellowship centered on Christian principles, they might be able to encourage each other as they serve God wherever they have been sent.

Rev. Lee said that soon after the installation of Dr. Han Wei as president of Chung-Yuan Christian University this year he had suggested the same thing. He was pleased to hear the same sentiments issuing from a man whom he had counseled so many years ago, and is happy to lend his support to the effort.
