Search on for #2 GAC job

Deputy executive for witness position to be filled by Nov. 1

by Jerry Van Marter

LOUISVILLE - The search process has begun to find the top programmatic deputy to new Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) General Assembly Council (GAC) Executive Director Linda Valentine.

The new position - Deputy Executive Director for Witness - was posted Aug. 23 and Valentine has announced a four-person "interview team" from around the PC(USA) to conduct the search. She says she expects interviews to be conducted during September and October and her new deputy to be in place by Nov. 1.

Members of the interview team:

The Rev. Dan Rift, executive pastor, Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church, Dallas, TX.

The Rev. Raschell Hunter, pastor, Community Presbyterian Church, Midland, MI, and an instructor at McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago and Western Theological Seminary in Michigan.

Elder Elinor Hite, a member and former chair of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Foundation board of trustees, and vice president for strategic human resources, YMCA.

The Rev. Steve Yamaguchi, executive presbyter, Los Ranchos Presbytery.

The interview team has contracted with Boardwalk Consulting of Atlanta, the executive search firm that assisted in the search that resulted in Valentine's hiring earlier this year.

According to the job posting, the witness deputy will have "responsibility for leading and managing all program areas of the GAC."

Prior to a GAC restructuring in May of this year, the GAC's programmatic work was divided among three divisions - Worldwide, National and Congregational. A detailed structure for the GAC's yearly $95 million mission program is expected to be approved when the council meets here at the end of September.

Valentine says the new deputy, along with other senior staff, will be responsible to:

"Articulate a theology of mission service and witness that takes into account the realities of our day."

"Provide leadership to the organization in instilling a renewed spirit of collaboration, both internally and externally, creating an atmosphere that values information-sharing, cooperation and transparency."

"Foster an environment that seeks the most positive outcomes for the church, setting goals and developing appropriate mechanisms to regularly evaluate progress in this regard."

"Continue to implement recreation of the GAC as it becomes more outwardly directed and responsive to all church constituencies."

Any interested applicants are encouraged to visit the One Door Web site (http://www.pcusa.org/onedoor). Select "search positions" and then check the boxes "full time," "management/administration" and "PCUSA Presbyterian Minister of Word and Sacrament." Only PC(USA) ministers are eligible for the position. For more information contact Peggie Blenman, the GAC's associate director for human resources, by email at pblenman@ctr.pcusa.org; or by phone at 1-888-728-7228, ext. 5710.

A search is also under way for a second deputy - Deputy Executive Director for Shared Services - who will manage all of the support services of the council.
