MECC General Secretary Activities in August

1- MECC General Secretary Pays an Official Visit to H. B. Cardinal Mar Nasrallah B. Sfeir in Diman, Lebanon MECC General Secretary accompanied by a senior staff team visited H. B. Cardinal Sfeir, Maronite Patriarch, in his summer residence in Diman, to inform him of the MECC Emergency Relief activities undertaken in the last few weeks. Mr. Saleh briefed His Beatitude of his visit to Geneva and its outcome. Patriarch Sfeir emphasized the importance of solidarity among the Lebanese to overcome this difficult period in Lebanon, and called for prayers and for the maintenance of national unity.

2- MECC General Secretary¹s Meeting with Lebanese Minister of Social Affair s Mr. Guirgis Saleh met with Mrs. Nayla Moawad, Social Affairs Minister, to coordinate the emergency relief operation with the Ministry.

They discussed the dramatic situation of the population in the south of Lebanon and their immense needs. The needs in the villages of Marjeyoun, Debel, Rmeish, and Ain Ebel were highlighted. MECC will assist and provide support to the population in these villages.

3-MECC General Secretary and Senior Staff Team Visit South Lebanon On Saturday August 26, 2006, Mr. Guirgis Saleh Saleh visited the south of Lebanon, accompanied by a MECC senior staff team, to assess the damages and needs in the region.

They met with the NGO Collective in Saida in the premises of the Evangelica l School of Arts, where Mr. Saleh announced the reopening of the MECC offices there.

From Saida, the MECC delegation proceeded to Nabatieh where they met with

the Mayor, Mr. Mahmoud Al Mawla, in the presence of Municipality members and civil society organizations. They assessed the extent of the damages an d needs of the population in the area. The Mayor thanked the MECC delegation for the visit and for the relief distribution to the civilian population of the region. However, he also underlined the necessity to focus efforts on de-mining and removal of unexploded ordnance.

MECC General Secretary expressed his appreciation regarding the Lebanese population¹s endurance and its ability to rebuild the nation. He said, Lebanon distinguished itself by its unity in these dramatic circumstances. As one nation, the country will recover quickly from the destruction caused by Israel. He informed of the emergency operation of the Council and relief distribution efforts in the country. Concluding, Mr. Saleh said that the MECC believes in a just peace for all in the region.

On this occasion, the delegation visited the damaged areas of Nabatieh, the National Evangelical School and Mar Antonios Monastery as well as the Antonine Sisters¹ School in upper Nabatieh and the village of Zawtar Al Gharbieh where the MECC/NCA team have supported water and sanitation projects and ensured a generator to maintain electricity in support of the population in the area.
