AUSTIN, TX * The Rev. Darrell Guder, dean of academic affairs and the Henry Winters Luce Professor of Missional and Ecumenical Theology at Princeton Theological Seminary, [http://www.austinseminary.edu/ ] will give the 2006 Settles Lectures in Mission and Evangelism at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary. The first lecture is on Nov. 1 and the second lecture is on Nov. 2. Both lectures will take place in the seminary's Shelton Chapel, with overflow seating available on the second floor of the McMillan building. The subject of the lectures is "Mission, Evangelism and the Unity of the Church." The two lectures are titled "From Unity to Apostolicity: Western Christendom's Approach to Ecumenics" and "From Apostolicity to Unity: An Ecumenical Vision for the Global Church." CHARLOTTE, NC * Calvin Lewers, a master of divinity student at Union-PSCE at Charlotte, an extension of Union Theological Seminary and Presbyterian School of Christian Education [http://www.union-psce.edu/] in Richmond, VA; has been named a recipient of the Elo Henderson Scholarship. The scholarship supports gifted African-American students in the preparation for ministry. Lewers was principal of Hawthorne Middle School from 1988-2001. He previously worked as an assistant principal and guidance teacher. He is an active member of Grier Heights Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, a congregation founded by the Rev. Elo Henderson, for whom the scholarship is named. Lewers enrolled in the master of divinity program at Union-PSCE at Charlotte in 2003. He holds a master's degree in education and a bachelor's degree in political science. He becomes the second recipient of the Henderson Scholarship at Union-PSCE at Charlotte. The scholarship aims to encourage African-American students who seek to become pastors and leaders in the church.

DECATUR, GA * Mark Douglas, associate professor of Christian ethics at Columbia Theological Seminary, [http://www.ctsnet.edu/] will lead a two-day seminar Nov. 8-9 designed for pastors and others who wrestle with the relationship between Christianity and politics. Participants will explore how differing approaches to eschatology shape political practices, how politics plays out in light of these differences, and how churches respond to political issues. Beginning the day after the mid-term elections, the seminar will offer opportunities to frame these discussions in light of current events. The cost of the seminar is $175. LOUISVILLE * Lilly Endowment Inc. has awarded a grant to Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary [http://www.lpts.edu/] of $4,999,770 to support the work of The Louisville Institute through 2009. Generously supported since 1990 by Lilly Endowment Inc., [http://www.lillyendowment.org/religion.html] the Louisville Institute seeks to enrich the religious life of American Christians and to encourage the revitalization of their institutions. Since 1990, the Louisville Institute has made nearly 1,300 grants totaling more than $22.5 million. The current grant will enable the Louisville Institute to extend its grantmaking and convening work with pastoral leaders and scholar-educators in religion and theology for the good of the church and North American society. The grant also enables the Louisville Institute to launch a new research grant program focusing specifically on pastoral leadership. The Louisville Institute offers funding through seven competitive grant programs in addition to a small general grant program.

PITTSBURGH, PA * Pittsburgh Theological Seminary [http://www.pts.edu/] has announced that the Rev. John Welch has been named vice president for student services and dean of students. Welch will begin service on Jan. 1. Welch received a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering and economics from Carnegie Mellon University. Prior to his call to ministry and attending Pittsburgh Theological Seminary his career focused on computer technology and management systems. While in seminary he began serving at Bidwell Presbyterian Church, and after his graduation in 2002 he was called to serve as pastor of the church. Welch sits on advisory boards for the Center for Quality End of Life, the Metro-Urban Institute of Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, the University of Pittsburgh's Center for Minority Health, and Centers for Healthy Hearts and Souls, a spiritual- and health-based wellness project to meet the needs of the minority population. He is also the newly elected president of the Pittsburgh Interfaith Impact Network, a coalition of more than 30 faith-based groups working to promote regional equity and social justice in the Greater Pittsburgh area and surrounding region. He was recently appointed to serve on the City of Pittsburgh's five-member Ethics Hearing Board and he is currently enrolled in the doctoral program for Healthcare Ethics at Duquesne University.

PRINCETON, NJ * Sculptor Charles McCollough will present an exhibit titled "The Art of the Parable" at Princeton Theological Seminary's [http://www.ptsem.edu/] Erdman Art Gallery from Oct. 30 - Dec. 8. As both an artist and a theologian, McCollough typically works with spiritual elements through wood, clay and bronze. McCollough earned a doctorate in theology from Drew University and studied sculpture at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and at the Johnson Atelier in New Jersey. The Erdman Art Gallery is in its seventh year of presenting local and national artists for the benefit of the community. The exhibit is free and open to the public. SAN ANSELMO, CA * San Francisco Theological Seminary [http://www.sfts.edu/] has received a commitment of $2 million to establish the Rice Family Chair of Christian Spirituality at San Francisco seminary. This chair honors four people with very close ties to the seminary: the Rev. Howard Rice, professor of ministry and chaplain from 1968-1997; Nancy Rice; the late Rev. Wendy Dreitcer, one of the Rice's daughters who is an alumna; and Andrew Dreitcer, founding director of the SFTS Diplomas in Spiritual Direction and Spiritual Formation Studies. President Phil Butin said the anonymous donor deeply appreciates the ministry of each member of the Rice family and was personally blessed by their ministries at different times. The purpose of the Rice Family Chair of Christian Spirituality is to ensure that the study and practice of Christian spirituality remains central to the SFTS Master of Divinity curriculum. A celebration of the new Rice Family Chair of Christian Spirituality is being planned during the Alumni Reunion Weekend April 19-21. More details will be posted on the seminary's Web site closer to the event.
