For all of our readers living in or traveling to Southern California, the J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center in Los Angeles is offering a unique opportunity to experience devotional art and artifacts from the cradle of Judeo-Christianity. Holy Image, Hallowed Ground: Icons from Sinai will be on view from November 14, 2006, to March 4, 2007, in a special engagement only at the Getty Center. The exhibition offers an unprecedented look at some of the oldest surviving religious icons of the Byzantine world and a rare glimpse into life at the Holy Monastery of Saint Catherine in Sinai, Egypt.

Organized from the monastery's extraordinary collection with the aid of the resident monks, the exhibition will present a scholarly exploration of the aesthetics of faith, featuring 43 icons and six manuscripts, many of which have rarely left Sinai.

The oldest functioning Christian monastery, St. Catherine's is nestled at the base of Mount Sinai, the sacred site where Moses is said to have encountered the Burning Bush and the voice of God and later received the Ten Commandments. The monastery houses a treasured collection of more than 2,000 icons, some dating to the sixth century, as well as the library's collection of more than 3,000 manuscripts, which is second only to the Vatican in number.

This exhibit is brought to the museum by the J. Paul Getty Trust, an international cultural and philanthropic institution devoted to the visual arts. For more information, call 310-440-7300 or visit www.getty.edu <http://www.getty.edu> .
