Title: Taiwan’s Presbyterians set Dates, Place and Theme of 52nd General Assembly

Taiwan Church News 2855 13-19 November 2006

Reported by Li Hsin-ren . Written by David Alexander

The Executive Committee of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan (PCT) recently announced the dates, location and theme of the 52nd General Assembly. It will convene from April 10 to 13, 2007 at Mackay Memorial Hospital in Taipei.

The emphasis will be on Women’s Ministry and the theme “Establish the Family Altar and Share Abundant Life”.

Meeting for the first time on 8th November, the preparatory committee for the 52nd General Assembly set tie time and date, and made plans to convene at least six more times before the assembly gathers.

PCT General Secretary Chang De-chien pointed out, This year’s 51st General Assembly paid particular attention to youth, and the response was favourable. The idea of a particular emphasis from year to year has been affirmed, and the selection of women for the 52nd assembly was confirmed. The practical work towards environmental protection first attempted at the 51st Assembly uncovered the lack of environmentally friendly habits among the delegates. Nevertheless, it will again be part of what is normal at the 52nd Assembly. The Taiwan Church Press will be marketing reusable dining utensils, and the Assembly will continue to call for delegates to prepare and bring their own chopsticks for reasons both of environment and health.

Two years ago, the 50th General Assembly also met in Taipei at Mackay Hospital. Meals were taken at a nearby hotel, but many in attendance became bored with the limited variety in the menu, and much food was left uneaten. Those in charge of the meeting of the 52nd Assembly have taken this into account and have made other arrangements.

Minutes of the upcoming meeting will be distributed not on paper, but on CD. This change, according to the general secretary, will not only make storage more convenient, it will save on postage. For those clergy and churches that are not yet computerized, paper distribution will be available. By these means the Assembly is not only attempting to cut costs, but to reduce paper use as well.
