Lombard Prize Winners Announced in Geneva
The winners of the 2005-2006 Lombard Prize were announced today by the World Alliance of Reformed Churches (WARC) and the prize donors the Lombard Odier Darier Hentsch Bank and the Lombard family.
The theme for the essay award for young pastors and theological students was ?Water, source of life: socio-economic, theological and interreligiou s perspectives.? Fourteen submission were received from around the world from pastors and theological students 35 years and younger.
The winners are:
- first prize (U.S.$ 1,000), Anderson Jeremiah, 34, of the Church of South India; - second prize (U.S.$ 800), Clifford Rawlins, 35, of the Presbyterian Church in Trinidad and Tobago; - third prize (U.S.$ 600), Carola Ruth Tron, 30, of the Waldensian Evangelical Church of the River Plate, Uruguay.
The international jury included well-known Reformed theologians:
- Allan Boesak of South Africa - François Bovon of Switzerland - Jane Dempsey Douglass of the United States - Antonio Mendonça of Brazil - Elizabeth Tapia of the Philippines.
The Lombard Prize is named after the late Georges Lombard, general treasurer of the Alliance from 1948 to 1970, whose family, along with the Lombard Odier Darier Hentsch Bank, established the award to encourage and support exceptional students and young pastors from WARC member churches.
The prize winners were announced at a meeting of the Officers of the Alliance who are gathered this week from around the world in Geneva. Members of the Lombard family took part in the announcement ceremony.
Clifton Kirkpatrick, president of WARC, noted the significant contribution that Georges Lombard made in his life to serve humanity. He was a businessman and a banker who understood the value of investing in organizations dedicated to alleviating poverty and seeking justice.
Setri Nyomi, general secretary of the Alliance, said the prize was created in honour of Georges Lombard in order to encourage young theologians to reflect critically and creatively, putting their insights on theology and economics together in order to contribute to the emergence of a better world.
He paid tribute to the young scholars, saying their insights and dedication are an inspiration to the millions of young people throughout the WARC family of churches.
?There is great reason for optimism in our churches if this is the kind of scholarship that is taking place,? Nyomi said of the winning essays.
He also thanked the Lombard family and the Lombard Odier Darier Hentsch Bank for their ongoing support of WARC in the formation of young pastors and theological students of WARC?s member churches.
Added Kirkpatrick, ?The Lombard Prize represents the kind of partnership that is so important in today?s world. Here we have the business community working alongside the church to support young people and the ongoing dialogue around Reformed theology and economic justice.

Lauréats du Prix Lombard proclamés à Genève
Les lauréats du Prix Lombard 2005-2006 ont été proclamés aujourd? hui par l?Alliance réformée mondiale (ARM) et les créateurs du Prix, la banque Lombard Odier Darier Hentsch ainsi que la famille Lombard.
Le sujet du concours récompensé, à l?intention de jeunes pasteurs et étudiants en théologie, était « L?eau, source de vie : perspectives socio-économiques, théologiques et interreligieuses. » Le jury avait reçu 14 textes rédigés par des pasteurs et des étudiant(e)s en théologie du monde entier âgé(e)s jusqu?à 35 ans.
Les lauréats sont :
Premier prix (USD 1?000), Anderson Jeremiah, 34, de l?Eglise de l?Inde du Sud Second prix (USD 800), Clifford Rawlins, 35, de l?Eglise presbytérienne de Trinidad et Tobago Troisième prix (USD 600), Carola Ruth Tron, 30, de l?Eglise vaudoise du Rio de la Plata, Uruguay.
Le jury international se compose de théologiens/théologiennes réformé(e)s bien connu(e)s :

Le Prix Lombard porte son nom en souvenir du défunt Georges Lombard, trésorier de l?Alliance de 1948 à 1970, dont la famille * d?entente avec la banque Lombard Odier Darier Hentsch * a créé ce prix pour encourager et soutenir des étudiant(e)s exceptionnel(le)s et de jeunes pasteurs d?Eglises membres de l?ARM.
Les lauréats du prix ont été proclamés lors d?une session des responsables de l?Alliance, provenant du monde entier et réunies cette semaine à Genève. Des membres de la famille Lombard ont participé à la cérémonie d?annonce.
Clifton Kirkpatrick, président de l?ARM, soulignait la contribution significative que Georges Lombard avait apportée au cours de sa vie pour le service de l?humanité. Il a été un homme d?affaires et un banquier qui comprenait l?importance de s?investir dans des organisatio ns consacrées à alléger la pauvreté et à chercher la justice.
Setri Nyomi, secrétaire général de l?Alliance, disait que le prix avait été créé en l?honneur de Georges Lombard afin d?encourage r de jeunes théologien(ne)s à réfléchir de manière critique et créative, joignant leur sens théologique à leur compréhension de l?économie pour contribuer à l?émergence d?un monde meilleur.
Il a salué les jeunes savants, disant que leurs découvertes et leur esprit de consécration étaient une inspiration pour des millions de jeunes à travers la famille des Eglises membres de l?ARM.
« Il y a de bonnes raisons d?être optimiste pour nos Eglises, lorqu?on voit que ce genre de recherche y est accueilli, » disait Nyomi à propos des lauréats du concours.
Nyomi remerciait également la famille Lombard et la banque Lombard Odier Darier Hentsch de leur soutien continu à la formation des jeunes pasteurs et d?étudiant(e)s en théologie d?Eglises membres de l?ARM.
Et Kirkpatrick d?ajouter : « Le Prix Lombard représente ce type de partenariat qui est si important dans le monde d?aujourd?hui. Ici, nous avons le monde des affaires travaillant aux côtés de l?Eglise pour soutenir les jeunes et favoriser le dialogue permanent entre la théologie réformée et la justice économique. Nous nous réjouisson s de ce type de partenariat. »
