by Melissa Ramirez Cooper, ELCA News Service

Dr. Steven E. Titus will resign as president of Midland Lutheran College, Fremont, Neb., at the end of the 2006-2007 academic year. Titus, 42, became president of the college in 2002. Midland is one of 28 colleges and universities of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

In a Midland news release Titus said, "I am appreciative of the (Midland board of trustees') confidence in my leadership and the direction of the college, and in its encouragement to continue as president." He said, "My decision is guided by strong yearning to have more time with my family and to serve the higher education community in broader and innovative ways." Titus and his wife, Sara, are the parents of two daughters.

According to the news release, Titus led a comprehensive organizational restructuring that included the development of a new mission statement and core values. He strengthened Midland's financial integrity and directed "the most comprehensive" strategic planning effort in the school's 123-year history. During Titus' tenure the college made $16 million in capital improvements, which included two new residence halls and the Event Center for Athletics and Conferencing.
