Council of Catholic Churches in Syria Meets in Aleppo

The Council of Catholic Churches in Syria held their annual meeting in Aleppo (27 ­ 29 November, 2006) at the Chaldean Church. The Council was headed by H. B. Patriarch Gregorios Lahham of the Greek Melkite Catholic Church and attended by all the Catholic Bishops in Syria. On the Council¹s agenda: reports from the various churches in the country. In the session on ecumenical business, Mr Razek Siriani director of the MECC Unit on Educatio n & Renewal presented a working paper on a "new vision of ecumenical work", stressing on three main issues: Christian Presence in the Middle East, the celebration of Easter on a unified day, and the relationships of churches with the Middle East Council of Churches. The discussion that followed took the points seriously and the Council suggested some practical recommendations to be followed up with the MECC.
