Search opens for Deputy Executive Director for Communications and Funds Development

by Jerry Van Marter

LOUISVILLE - General Assembly Council (GAC) Executive Director Linda Valentine has begun the search for her third deputy executive director - Deputy Executive Director for Communications and Funds Development.

In recent weeks, Valentine has named Joey Bailey as Deputy Executive Director for Shared Services and CFO and the Rev. Tom Taylor as Deputy Executive Director for Mission.

Three former Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) GAC offices will be gathered under the new deputy - the Office of Communication, the Office of Stewardship and Mission Funding and the Office of Mission Education and Promotion. The new communications and funds development office will include about 50 national staff members.

Valentine has repeatedly stressed since she took office in July that leaders throughout the church have expressed "a great need - and a great thirst - for profoundly better communication" throughout the church. She frequently cites research indicating that more than 80 percent of Presbyterians know little about the national or international mission of the PC(USA).

"This is a critically important position," Valentine told the Presbyterian News Service. "And it's critically important to understand that it's not just about communicating from the GAC to the rest of the church but to facilitate communication among all parts of the church."

According to a "leadership profile" developed in consultation with Boardwalk, an executive search firm that has worked with the GAC on two other assignments, the primary responsibilities of the new Deputy Executive Director for Communications and Funds Development are to:

"conceptualize and lead an integrated communications and funds development program ... "

"develop and implement bold but realistic goals for communications and funds development" as well as "strategic and operational plans necessary to achieve them" "provide effective communications support, both proactive and reactive, to the Executive Director's office and to the organization as a whole"

"optimize opportunities for synergistic working relationships" with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Foundation and others

" ... contribute actively to a culture of

collaboration, accountability and responsiveness ... "

The "leadership profile indicates that candidates must be "practicing Presbyterians" with a theological as well as practical understanding of stewardship; must be collaborative in style with strong speaking, writing and listening skills; must be creative and strategic thinkers with well-rounded management skills; and must be "open, fair and sensible, balancing a sense of authority and presence with humor and levity."

Persons interested in being considered or who wish to suggest others for the position should contact Boardwalk Consulting by email at info@boardwalkconsulting.com, or by phone (Sam Pettway or Kelly Lee) at (404) 262-7392.
