AJC Study Details Iranian Nuclear Threat

December 4, 2006 - New York - Toward a Nuclear Iran, published today by the American Jewish Committee, is the latest initiative in AJC's education and diplomacy campaign to encourage international action aimed at thwarting Iran?s efforts to cross the nuclear threshold.   "There is no greater challenge today for the world than Iran?s nuclear weapons program," said AJC Executive Director David A. Harris.  "Only a united, meaningful response by the international community stands a chance at deterring Iran from acting on its foreboding intentions."   AJC's efforts have included full-page ads in the Financial Times, International Herald Tribuneand New York Times, as well as national radio messages in the U.S. The Iranian nuclear issue continues to top the agenda in AJC leadership meetings with world leaders.   The 25-page booklet reviews the history of Iran?s known and clandestine nuclear program, and the threat that an Iran, with nuclear weapons, would pose to moderate Arab and Muslim countries, Israel, Europe and the U.S.   "Over the last four years, Iran has maintained an unwavering stance with regard to its nuclear program. Temporary suspension of enrichment and reprocessing activities has been just that ? temporary. Iran appears determined to achieve its stated goal of becoming a nuclear power," states the AJC report.   President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has proven to be a zealous and combative leader who is determined to build a nuclear capability while threatening the very existence of Israel and defying the international community. The UN Security Council and the International Atomic Energy Agency have called on Iran to desist from enriching uranium, but Iran has proceeded with this activity.   Toward a Nuclear Iran also includes a technical glossary for Iran?s nuclear program and a timeline with highlights of its two decade-old quest to develop a bomb.   The booklet is available at www.ajc.org, or by contacting Dan Larson, at 212-891-1366.
