Retired educator was instrumental in training, organizing resource center directors

by Jerry Van Marter

LOUISVILLE - The Presbyterian Association of Resource Centers (PARC) has named Jo Bales Gallagher an honorary life member and has established the Jo Bales Gallagher Scholarship Fund to benefit those working toward certification as resource center directors in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)

The announcement was made by outgoing PARC President Mary Lou McMillin at the group's recent business meeting in Dallas, held in conjunction with the Ecumenical Resource Center Gathering.

Gallagher, who served on the national staff of the PC(USA) for many years until her retirement in 1990, was instrumental in establishing the network of Presbyterian Resource Centers across the denomination beginning in the early 1970's. She was also a driving force in the establishment of the Ecumenical Resource Center Gathering and later founded the National Training Center for Resource Center Directors (NTC).

Checks for the scholarship fund should be made payable to: The Presbyterian Association of Resource Centers, c/o Madelyn Mitchell, Mission Presbytery, 100 E. 27th St., Austin, Texas 78705

At the gathering, PARC members also elected a new slate of officers: president -Mae Weed, Pittsburgh PA; vice-president - Susan Orr of Rochester, NY; secretary - Roxanne Lawrence of Milwaukee, WI (re-elected); treasurer - Madelyn Mitchell of Austin, TX (re-elected); and new members-at-large Kristie Matheson of Norfolk, VA and Joan Erikson of Wichita, KS.

McMillin, Harrisonburg, VA assumes the role of past-president and Michael Purintun, associate for middle governing body services in the curriculum development and Christian education office in Louisville, continues as a PC(USA) staff advisor in an ex-officio capacity.

The theme of this year's gathering was "Christ and Culture." It featured a presentation by spiritual director and Presbyterians Today media critic Theresa Blythe in which she combined contemporary movie clips with opportunities for reflection and prayer. Blythe is the author of 50 Ways to Pray: Practices from Many Traditions and Times.
