GAC program leadership named

Two slots permanently filled, others are temporary

by Jerry Van Marter

LOUISVILLE - General Assembly Council (GAC) Executive Director Linda Valentine has announced appointments of temporary leaders to head four of the GAC's six new program areas until permanent directors are called.

Valentine earlier announced the permanent appointments of the Rev. Joe Small as director of the Theology, Worship and Education program area and Sara Pottschmitt Lisherness as director of the Peace and Justice program area.

The six mission program areas will be overseen by Deputy Executive Director for Mission Tom Taylor, a pastor in Glendora, CA. Taylor assumes his new position in January.

Temporary leaders announced today (Dec. 19) are:

Will Browne and Bill Simmons, World Mission in Partnership (Browne was formerly associate director for ecumenical partnerships and Simmons was coordinator of finance and administration in the former Worldwide Ministries Division)

Lisherness, Relief and Development

Bridgett Green and Vanessa Hawkins, Racial Ethnic and Women's Ministries (Green is associate for Racial Ethnic Young Women Together and Hawkins is associate for black congregational enhancement)

Marcia Myers, Evangelism and Church Growth

On Dec. 18, Valentine and General Assembly Stated Clerk Clifton Kirkpatrick announced that Myers will direct a new Department of Church Vocation (tentative name), a joint office of the GAC and Office of the General Assembly that will combine ecclesiastical and programmatic functions related to church professionals.

The six new program areas replace the former Ministry Division structure that was in place from 1993 until last spring, when the GAC embarked upon a restructure of the national offices. The new GAC structure goes into effect Jan. 1, 2007.

All three division director positions - Congregational Ministries, National Ministries and Worldwide Ministries - were eliminated in May, followed this summer by the elimination of eight associate director positions related to the old structure.

To date, three incumbents of those eleven positions have been retained in the new GAC structure: Curtis Kearns, former director of the National Ministries Division, is now executive administrator, overseeing a number of the GAC entities; Lisherness, who was formerly associate director for the Presbyterian Peacemaking Program; and Small, who was formerly associate director for theology and worship.

Browne, who was formerly associate director for ecumenical partnership, is still eligible for one of the vacant positions.

Seven other former directors or associate directors have resigned, retired or been laid off. They include: Marian McClure, former director of the Worldwide Ministries Division; Donald Campbell, former director of the Congregational Ministries Division; Mary Elva Smith, former associate director for women's ministries; Patricia Chapman, former associate director for justice and compassion; James Thomas, former associate director for evangelism and church development; Sandra Moak, former associate director for congregational ministries publishing and Christian education; and Gary Cook, former associate director for global service and witness.

Valentine has also retained Joey Bailey, former deputy for mission support services and CFO, whose new title is deputy executive director for shared services and CFO.

One other new department - Communications and Funds Development - is still in flux. Valentine said a deputy executive director for that department should be in place by March. In the meantime, Kearns is providing temporary leadership to the funds development office and Barry Creech, coordinator for information and planning in the Office of Communication, is providing temporary leadership there.
