AJC Condemns UN General Assembly Resolution on Security Fence Register
December 15, 2006 - The American Jewish Committee is deeply disappointed by yet another one-sided resolution adopted by the Tenth Emergency Special Session of the UN General Assembly on Israel, this time calling for the establishment of a "register" within the UN system to monitor Palestinian claims regarding Israel's security fence.
"Israel has already made substantial changes to minimize the impact of its security fence on Palestinian populations not involved in terror," said AJC. "The Israeli government has fully complied with the Israeli Supreme Court's decision that the specific route of the fence must 'appropriately balance' security needs against the needs of local Palestinian residents."
The legal process in Israel clearly demonstrates that Palestinian residents of the West Bank have a process by which they can address their claims. The establishment of a new mechanism within the UN will not advance the Palestinians' cause. It will only politicize a process already addressed through available legal means, while expending valuable UN resources.
Israel was forced to construct the fence because of the relentless terror campaign perpetrated by Palestinian terrorist organizations against Israel. So far, the security fence has dramatically reduced suicide bombings and other attacks against Israel emanating from the West Bank.
AJC applauds Australia, Micronesia, Marshal Islands, Nauru, Palau, and the United States, for voting against the resolution.
