Special Prayers Held For Darfur By the AACC

(NAIROBI) 24 January: The All Africa Conference of Churches (AACC) together in collaboration with the Darfur Consortium held special prayer service for Darfur on 24th January.

The AACC President, Rev. Dr. Nyansako-ni-NKU presided over the service held at the AACC compound. Rev. Nyansako noted that Darfur had witnessed horrendous atrocities in a wider scale. He lamented that torture and deprivation had become the daily menu for the people of Darfur. In the minds of people, Darfur had become synonymous with all that was evil in humanity, especially that it was largely being inflicted by their own leaders.

Rev. Nyansako regretted that material considerations and political alliances had taken precedence over human life, "especially when that human life is black." He observed that greed today represented the worst pollutions of "our time" where some people wanted to own everything that God had made for all His children. Rev. Nyansako warned the Sudan government that they could only slow the process of peace but could not stop it. He prayed for the spirit of love and forgiveness to replace that of hatred and vengeance.

The AACC General Secretary, Rev. Dr. Mvume Dandala took issue with the delay of the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) by the Khartoum government. He alerted the world that time was running out for the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) by the Sudan government in Southern Sudan.

Rev. Dandala said the killing in Darfur was racially motivated and not a religious conflict as the Janjaweed, the government and the people who they were exterminating are all followers of Islamic religion. He said that the people in Darfur were being killed because of their colour, a matter he said, was degrading God's creation.

Rev. Dandala urged churches all over the world to keep their eyes open on Sudan. He affirmed that the AACC was committed to walk with the people of Southern Sudan and Darfur. He said AACC was longing for the day the people of Sudan would have peace in its true sense, when Blacks and Arabs would walk hand in hand as people all created in the image of God by one father.

The AACC appeals to the Heads of State meeting at the African Union Summit in Addis Ababa to consider the role of the AU Presidency vis a vis the current situation in the Sudan, should the president of Sudan take the presidency. This will seriously undermine the credibility of the AU in dealing with the Darfur crisis.

The AU Assembly of Heads of State and Government should not confer the AU presidency to President El-Bashir of Sudan.
