ELCA college presidents sign 'Presidents Climate Commitment'
by John R. Brooks, ELCA News Service
Three Lutheran college presidents signed the "American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment," a pledge to take a leadership role in addressing global warming. Two presidents who signed as members of the commitment's "Leadership Circle" are Dr. Richard L. Torgerson of Luther College, Decorah, Iowa, and Dr. Loren J. Anderson, Pacific Lutheran University, Tacoma, Wash. Also on the list of signers is Dr. Richard Guarasci, Wagner College, Staten Island, N.Y.
All three schools are among the 28 colleges and universities of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
Leaders of the charter signatory institutions pledge to develop or enhance long-range plans for reducing and ultimately neutralizing greenhouse emissions on their campuses. They also pledge to educate a generation of leaders and professionals, and to demonstrate to their communities that there are significant competitive benefits to engaging in emission-reduction efforts.
