Services set for Roger Harp

Longtime PC(USA) executive dies in traffic accident

by Jerry Van Marter

LOUISVILLE - Memorial services for the Rev. Roger Harp, a longtime presbytery and synod executive in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) will be held Feb. 23 in Grand Island, NE. Harp died Feb. 18 in a traffic accident on Interstate 80 while on his way to pick up his wife, Carolyn, in Lincoln, NE. He was 58.

Harp had moved back to Nebraska, where he previously served as a pastor and presbytery executive, in January to become pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Grand Island. For the previous three years he served as synod executive/stated clerk/treasurer for the Synod of the Mid-Atlantic.

Earlier, he served as executive presbyter for Homestead Presbytery, based in Omaha, and Heartland Presbytery, based in Kansas City. Harp also served as a pastor in Lincoln early in his career.

He was particularly loved for his mentoring of young pastors and was never heard to utter an unkind word about anyone.

His office at the Grand Island church is still filled with moving boxes. He began work as pastor there on Jan. 15.

After conducting two worship services Sunday morning, Harp was driving to Lincoln to pick up Carolyn and celebrate the birth of his first granddaughter. Along the way, according to KHAS-TV in Lincoln, his car crossed the median and struck an oncoming semi-truck.

Roger Harp is survived by his wife, Carolyn; son, Corbett C. Harp of Brooklyn, NY; daughter, Martha Jansen Harp and son-in-law Zachary Boye of Portland, OR; stepson, Phillip and wife Annette Whitmarsh of Lincoln; stepdaughter, Karen, and husband, Mark Hoffman of Lincoln; three grandchildren; and his mother, Gloria Harp of Tulsa, OK. His first wife - Martha, who died of pancreatic cancer in 1997 - and father, Morris, preceded him in death.
