Lutheran Theological Center leader on 'Day 1' broadcasts

by Frank Imhoff, ELCA News Service

The Rev. Lawrence J. Clark, executive director, Lutheran Theological Center in Atlanta (LTCA), is the speaker March 25 and April 1 on "Day 1," a nationally broadcast weekly radio program and podcast. Each program includes a sermon by Clark and an interview with him by the program's host, Peter Wallace. The March 25 program, "Oh, the Things that Happen at Bethany," looks at the significance of the village of Bethany, where Jesus stopped to be with friends before going to Jerusalem. On Palm Sunday, April 1, Clark asks, "What are you willing to die for? What do you have so much passion for that you would die for it?"

Formerly known as "The Protestant Hour," Day 1 has been broadcast every week for 62 years, winning numerous awards in the process, including the George Foster Peabody Award and the Crystal Award for Excellence in inspirational radio. It is produced by the Alliance for Christian Media in association with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, Episcopal Church, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), United Church of Christ and United Methodist Church.

Clark studied at LTCA on his way to a master of divinity degree from Trinity Lutheran Seminary, Columbus, Ohio. He served as a lay campus pastor at San Francisco State University and pastor at Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church, Chicago, before he joined the staff of the ELCA Metropolitan Chicago Synod in 2003 as associate to the bishop. In 2006 he was named executive director for LTCA and a member of the administrative staff of Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, Columbia, S.C. LTCA is located on the campus of the Interdenominational Theological Center, a consortium of theological schools of several traditionally African American denominations in the Atlanta University complex. LTCA is an extension of all eight ELCA seminaries.
