Multimedia: Jayne Oasin on slavery, racial reconciliation

[ENS] The Rev. Jayne Oasin, social justice officer for the Episcopal Church, speaks about the abolition of slavery bill and General Convention resolutions regarding slavery and racial reconciliation.

"While it is undoubted that there are many Churches, many Christians, many people of God who vigorously fought against slavery, the Church as an institution was often not so quick to do so," she said. "We need to be one of the main voices -- and I would submit the major voice -- that says this was wrong ... we were wrong, and we apologize."

Resolution A123 (http://gc2006.org/legislation/view_leg_detail.aspx?id=130&type=CURRE NT), passed by the Episcopal Church's 75th General Convention in June 2006, declared "unequivocally that the institution of slavery in the United States and anywhere else in the world, based as it is on 'ownership' of some persons by other persons, was and is a sin and a fundamental betrayal of the humanity of all persons who were involved."

The resolution also urged every diocese initiate a comprehensive program and to collect and document during the next triennium detailed information on "the complicity of The Episcopal Church in the institution of slavery and in the subsequent history of segregation and discrimination."

A video stream of Oasin's message is available at http://www.episcopalchurch.org/81231_ENG_HTM.htm.

PBS' NOW to profile Iran delegation

[National Council of Churches] The PBS news magazine, NOW, this weekend will feature a report on a delegation of religious leaders that visited Iran in February. Two Episcopalians, Maureen Shea, director of the Office of Government Relations, and Sister Ellen Francis, an Episcopal priest in the Order of Saint Helena, were members of that delegation.

"Can U.S. religious leaders make a difference in the standoff between America and Iran?" is how NOW's website previews the program. NOW producers and videographers accompanied the delegation which met with several of Iran's religious and government leaders, including President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and former President Mohammad Khatami.

The two Episcopalians were among a 13-member delegation of U.S. religious leaders from the Mennonite, Quaker, Roman Catholic, Baptist and United Methodist churches. They spent the week of February 19-25 in Tehran and the holy city of Qom.

The PBS broadcast is a regular weekly program exploring a wide range of news topics. Broadcast times vary by city. Check your local PBS station for the broadcast time in your area or go online to http://www.pbs.org/now/sched.html?edit_st=y and search the NOW website for your area.
