Jamestown's 400th year: Episcopal Church joins observances; April 26 First Landing event nears Information, resources at episcopalchurch.org/400years

[Episcopal News Service] The Episcopal Church will join the months-long observance of the 400th anniversary of North America's first permanent English settlement in Jamestown, Virginia. The commemoration officially begins April 26 with the marking of the English settlers' first landing at what is now Virginia Beach.

The Episcopal Church traces the heritage of its first congregation to Jamestown, and many churchwide groups -- together with the dioceses in Virginia and West Virginia -- are commemorating the historical event with conferences and gatherings.

Faith-based partnership brings affordable housing to blighted Miami neighborhood

By Mary Cox

[Episcopal Life] It was a long wait, but the dream of home ownership is reality today in one of Miami's most neglected neighborhoods, thanks to a local Episcopal Church and its community partners.

Overtown, a place legitimately called blighted for decades, where 90 percent of residents could barely afford even rent, now is home to 80 two-story, three- and four-bedroom single-family homes. The Villas of St. Agnes, named after historic St. Agnes Episcopal Church, opened last year.

[Episcopal Life] Reading deathbed quotations can provide information and amusement, bewilderment, and boredom. Seldom, though, do famous last words produce meaning and inspiration.

Such is not the case with Jesus, however. Commonly, Good Friday sermons reflect on Christ's last words from the cross. But his truer deathbed quotations come in the lessons for today's worship.
