CHICAGO - The Rev. Homer U. Ashby Jr., W. Clement and Jessie V. Stone Professor of Pastoral Care at McCormick Theological Seminary, will be awarded the 2007 American Association of Pastoral Counselors Distinguished Contribution Award at the organization's annual meeting April 28. The award recognizes "longstanding, consistent contributions to the ministry of pastoral counseling through such endeavors as preaching, teaching, writing, editing, supervising and otherwise exemplary and inspirational activities and character that have furthered (AAPC's) cause in a significant way." Ashby received his Doctor of Philosophy degree in Pastoral Psychology from Northwestern University and has been an active member of his profession for nearly 30 years, having served as pastoral counselor with the Center for Religion and Psychotherapy of Chicago and chaplain at the Chicago Residential School. Ashby, an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church, joined the faculty at McCormick in 1979 and was named Stone Professor of Pastoral Care in 1986. He also has served on the seminary's board of trustees and in 2003 served a six-month term as interim president.

DECATUR, GA - Columbia Theological Seminary will offer a yearlong fellowship to a pastor or commissioned lay pastor serving a congregation in a rural setting. The Rural Ministry Fellowship begins in fall 2007 and will provide the Rural Ministry Fellowship recipient with financial support to attend several Lifelong Learning events at Columbia, including a Strengthening Rural Ministry conference at the seminary in May 2008. Completed applications for the fellowship are due June 1. Developed by the seminary's Center for Lifelong Learning, the fellowship and the conference are funded by gifts from individuals and congregations. These gifts also will provide scholarships for the conference. These will be awarded to 12 additional fellowship applicants. LOUISVILLE - James A Hyde, director of the Marriage and Family Therapy program at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, has been awarded a 2007 Distinguished Contributions and Lifetime Achievement Award from the Kentucky Association for Marriage & Family Therapy. A member of AAMFT since 1975, Hyde became an approved supervisor in 1995 and has supervised countless students and supervisor candidates over the years. Most recently, Hyde has served as a site visitor on behalf of the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education. He has also been named Chair of the Judicial Ethics Panel for the American Association of Pastoral Counselors.

PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh Theological Seminary will host two lectureships in late April. The first, April 26, will feature the Rev. Kenneth L. Carder, professor of the practice of pastoral formation at Duke Divinity School. The second, April 27, will feature the Rev. William H. Willimon, author, preacher and church leader. All events, part of the seminary's alumni days' events April 25-27, are free and open to the public. Carder will present two lectures on the theme "Friendship with the Poor: A Wesleyan Means of Grace." He is the 2007 Albright-Deering Lecture in Methodist Studies speaker. Willimon will present three lectures on the theme "The Miracle of Preaching: Preaching as God's Word." He is the 2007 J. Hubert Henderson Conference on Church and Ministry lecturer. PRINCETON, NJ - Malaysian artist Hanna-Cheriyan Varghese will exhibit her art in a show called "The Cry of My Soul" at Princeton Theological Seminary's Erdman Art Gallery until May 25. Varghese has worked with different mediums, including oil, metal-tooling and woodblock printing, but her current passion is painting with acrylic on canvas and batik-dyeing on fabric. Varghese's work has been exhibited in China, Japan, India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, South Korea and the Philippines. She is a past recipient of grants from the China Christian Art Association and the Asian Christian Art Association. She serves as coordinator of the Malaysian Christian Artists' Fellowship. The Erdman Art Gallery is in its seventh year of presenting local and national artists for the benefit of the community. The exhibit is free and open to the public. RICHMOND, VA - The Sprunt Lectures, Union Theological Seminary and Presbyterian School of Christian Education's annual lecture series and alumni reunion gathering, will be held May 2-4 here. Gail Ramshaw and Gordon Lathrop, two authors, scholars and leaders of Christian worship, will address "The Bible in Christian Worship" in four lectures. The lectures begin in the evening May 2 at Ginter Park Presbyterian Church. Ramshaw is a scholar of liturgical language and professor of religion at La Salle University. Lathrop is the Charles A. Schieren Professor of Liturgy Emeritus at the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia. Seminary president Louis Weeks, who will retire at the end of June, will be the preacher for worship on May 3. A reception on May 2 is planned to honor Weeks' service. Author Katherine Paterson, a graduate of PSCE, will speak at a banquet on Thursday evening, May 3. Paterson is the award-winning author of books for young people, including "Bridge to Terabithia." Lewis Galloway, pastor of Second Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis, IN, will speak at the luncheon on Thursday, May 3. Galloway is a trustee of Union-PSCE. Professor of New Testament Frances Taylor Gench will deliver an inaugural lecture on Friday, May 4. Gench, who joined the faculty in 1999, will be named as the Herbert Worth and Annie H.
