First international consultation on the Calvin Jubilee 2009
In 2009 Jean Calvin will be 500. An international conference held from 15-19 April 2007 marks a starting point for the preparations for the Calvin Jubilee that year. Invitations were issued by the John Knox International Reformed Center, the Federation of Swiss Protestant Churches, the World Alliance of Reformed Churches (WARC) and the Faculty of Theology of the University of Geneva.
More than 50 representatives of Reformed churches from 17 countries have been meeting since yesterday at a consultation in Geneva. With this occasion the preparations for the world-wide Calvin Jubilee in 2009 have begun. Its aim is to define the focal themes of the coming Jubilee and to co-ordinate the world-wide planning.
Jean Calvin, who was born in 1509, is regarded as one of the most important church reformers. Reformed churches from all over the world are celebrating the Calvin Jubilee in 2009 to commemorate his quincentenary. Numerous events then will bear witness to Calvin's topicality and relevance for the churches.
The consultation, which will last until Thursday, is mainly concerned with the broader context of Calvin's teaching. His reputation as the father of modernity, his understanding of the church, his interpretation of the Bible and his statements on ethics will be discussed. According to the Bochum Professor Christian Link, "At that time Calvin opened doors through which we can go today." He remarked that Calvin's theology sharpens awareness of the responsibility that we human beings must bear for the creation: this is no small contribution at a time when a view of the limits of what can be done threatens to be lost.

Jean Calvin va avoir 500 ans. Une conférence internationale marque du 15 au 19 avril 2007 le début des préparatifs pour la célébration en 2009 des 500 ans de la naissance de Calvin. L'invitation a été lancée par le Centre international réformé John Knox, la Fédération des Églises protestantes de Suisse, l'Alliance réformée mondiale et la Faculté de théologie de l'Université de Genève.
Plus de 50 représentantes et représentants d'Églises réformées de 17 pays sont réunies en consultation depuis hier à Genève. Cette réunion marque le début des préparatifs pour la célébration mondiale des 500 ans de la naissance de Calvin en 2009. La rencontre a pour but de définir les thèmes centraux de la célébration à venir et d'en coordonner les planifications au niveau mondial.
Jean Calvin, né en 1509, est considéré comme l'un des plus grands Réformateurs. C'est en 2009 que les Églises réformées du monde entier fêteront les 500 ans de sa naissance. De nombreuses manifestations témoigneront de l'actualité et de l'importance de Calvin pour les Églises.
La consultation qui se réunit jusqu'à jeudi porte en premier lieu sur le contenu et la portée de la doctrine de Calvin. Sur sa réputation de père de la modernité, sa conception de l'Église, son interprétation de la Bible et ses positions éthiques. «Calvin a ouvert en son temps des portes par où nous pouvons passer aujourd'hui encore» comme le dit Christian Link, professeur de théologie à Bochum. La théologie de Calvin aiguise la conscience de la responsabilité que nous les êtres humains avons envers la Création; voilà qui n'est pas une mince contribution à une époque qui semble menacée de perdre de vue les limites du faisable.

Johannes Calvin wird 500. Eine internationale Konferenz setzt vom 15.-19. April 2007 einen Startpunkt für die Vorbereitungen des Calvin-Jubiläums 2009. Eingeladen haben das Internationale Reformiete John Knox Zentrum, der Schweizerische Evangelische Kirchenbund, der Reformierte Weltbund und die Theologische Fakultät der Universität Genf.
Mehr als 50 Vertreterinnen und Vertreter reformierter Kirchen aus 17 Ländern versammeln sich seit gestern zu einer Konsultation in Genf. Mit dieser Veranstaltung beginnen die Vorbereitungen zum weltweiten Calvin-Jubiläum 2009. Ziel ist es, die thematischen Schwerpunkte des kommenden Jubiläums zu definieren und die weltweiten Planungen zu koordinieren.
Der 1509 geborene Johannes Calvin gilt als einer der bedeutendsten kirchlichen Reformatoren. Zu seinem 500jährigen Gedenken begehen reformierte Kirchen aus aller Welt das Calvin-Jubiläumsjahr 2009. Zahlreiche Veranstaltungen werden dort die Aktualität und Relevanz Calvins für die Kirchen belegen.
Inhaltlich steht in der bis zum Donnerstag tagenden Konsultation vor allem der weite Kontext der Lehre Calvins im Vordergrund. Sein Ruf als Vater der Moderne, sein Verständnis der Kirche, seine Interpretation der Bibel und seine ethischen Aussagen werden diskutiert. «Calvin hat damals Türen geöffnet, durch die wir heute schreiten können», so der Bochumer Theologe Prof. Christian Link. Die Theologie Calvins schärfe das Bewusstsein für die Verantwortung, die wir Menschen für die Schöpfung tragen: Dies sei in einer Zeit, die den Blick für die Grenzen des Machbaren zu verlieren drohe, kein geringer Beitrag.
