[NCC News]Let Justice Roll coordinator honored

Cincinnati, Ohio, April 25, 2007--Katy Heins, the associate national coordinator of the Let Justice Roll (LJR) living wage campaign, was honored for her work on behalf of Ohio's and the nation's working men and women. Heins is this year's recipient of the Fr. Joe Peschel Award presented by the Cincinnati Interfaith Committee for Worker Justice and the Cincinnati AFL-CIO Labor Council. The award was given Tuesday at the ninth annual dinner sponsored by the two organizations.

Heins became LJR's associate national coordinator in February when the Rev. Paul Sherry, national coordinator, decided to focus on fundraising and consulting for LJR. Sherry, former head of the United Church of Christ, has been the LJR's national coordinator since 2004 when LJR began as an anti-poverty response of the National Council of Churches USA. Since then LJR has grown into a coalition of 100 religious, community, business organizations currently working to raise the minumum wage on the state and national levels.

"This is an extremely well-deserved honor," said Sherry. "Katy's skills, drive and commitment to justice for America's working poor has long been demonstrated. She will lead Let Justice Roll forward in exciting ways."

Prior to her new role at the national LJR campaign, Heins was the lead organizer for Let Justice Roll-Ohio to raise that state's minimum wage. She has extensive experience in community organizing and advocacy in the greater Cincinnati area. Heins is a graduate of Xavier University in Cincinnati.

The National Council of Churches is the ecumenical voice of 35 of America's Protestant, Anglican, Orthodox, historic African American and traditional peace churches. Those member denominations represent 45 million faithful Christians in 100,000 congregations in all 50 states.
