by Annie Lynsen, ELCA News Service
Churches for Middle East Peace (CMEP) will feature several prominent speakers at its advocacy conference, "For the Peace of Jerusalem," May 6-8 in Washington, D.C.
The ecumenical conference on peace in the Middle East will focus on U.S. policy and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Workshop and plenary sessions will feature church leaders, issue analysts, policy experts and government officials, including former U.S. Senator Lincoln D. Chafee (R-R.I.). The opening worship on May 6 will be led by the Rev. Frank T. Griswold, former presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church; the Rev. Vicken Aykazian, archbishop of the Armenian Orthodox Church; and the Rev. Denis Madden, auxiliary bishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Baltimore.
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America is a sponsor of the event and will host a dinner for Lutheran participants May 7. On May 8 participants will lobby their elected officials on Middle East peace issues. Online registration for the event is available on the CMEP Web site: http://www.cmep.org/2007_conference/online%20registration.htm For information contact: John Brooks, Director (773) 380-2958 or news@elca.org http://www.elca.org/news ELCA News Blog: http://www.elca.org/news/blog
